Aerospatiale was selected, after a competitive international tender,
by Shinawatra Satellite Public Company, Ltd. (SSA) of Thailand to
build Thaicom 3, a telecommunication satellite. The contract was
signed on January 16, 1995. This was the first satellite contract
signed by Aerospatiale in Asia. Stationed in geostationary orbit
at 78.5° East, Thaicom 3 is providing coverage of Thailand and zones
in Asia, Australia and Africa with services in telecommunications
and direct TV broadcasting. Thaicom 3, launched in April 1997, is a
powerful, three-axis stabilized communications satellite with 39
transponders. Aerospatiale delivered the satellite in orbit after
its launch by Ariane.
